MY STORY
I was born loving clothes. My grandfather and my father manufactured women’s clothing, and as a young girl I often sat at the kitchen table, watching the fashion designers who came to our home sketch dresses, sweaters, trousers… everything fashion. Watching my father’s enthusiasm in his showroom every time a new line was introduced, I started loving fabrics and dresses, draped carefully on the feminine silhouette of the mannequins. I was fascinated with the idea of connecting the designers’ sketch to the fabric, to the product, and the people who wore them.
In 2003, I opened On the One, a store that represented my vision of sophisticated style, featuring selected pieces from American and international designers. In addition to exceptional product and merchandising, designer appearances and education, great company culture, and a commitment to philanthropy, the store’s huge success resulted from the positive personalized service experience I offered my luxury customer from the moment she walked in the door. For years, we rode the consumer frenzy, but in Spring of 2007, at the first signs of change in customers’ buying behavior, I realized it was the time to sell my business, which had significant growth year after year.
I made the decision to change directions, while staying true to the industry that served me well. After staying on board as buyer and mentor for a year, I was free to regroup my efforts in 2008. Building on my interest in yoga and wellness and my concern for the environment, and the fact that the headlines were all shouting “green!” was the obvious next step. I spent the next nine months establishing what is sure to be a lifelong commitment to educating myself on what sustainability means in fashion, and applying myself to leadership through the transition from a wasteful industry to one that is clean, safe, and beautiful. The more I learn, the more motivated I am to become a inspiration and catalyst for ethical positive change. Enter Pure Thread, my fashion stylist company that focuses on beautifully designed clothing that keeps both environmental and social responsibility in mind.Because the roots of fashion lie both in independent self-expression and in the desire to identify with a certain group or lifestyle, ethically produced fashion can be elemental to the lives of my styling clients. Whether they are unaware of the implications of the fashion industry on the health of the planet and those who inhabit it, simply responding to the noise of the trend, making quiet moves toward living more sustainably, or are more boisterous about their commitment, my work with them will help clients to confidently “vote with their dollars” in choosing sustainable fashion. I look forward to helping my clients define their values through recommendations of beautiful, sustainable apparel. But even more, I am honored to have a platform from which I can empower high-level change by sharing the stories of sustainability initiatives in fashion. My work will encourage the demand for ethically produced goods to eventually become the norm.
